FREE screening of the film Healing Voices.  This award-winning, 90-minute film explores the experiences commonly labeled as “psychosis” or “mental illness” through the real-life stories of individuals working to overcome extreme mental states.  The film follows three subjects over a period of nearly 5 years.  It features interviews with several notable authorities in the field of mental health, including Dr. Marius Romme,  Dr. Bruce Levine, Robert Whitaker, and others, on the history of psychiatry and the rise of the “medical model” in treatment.  In the words of its producers, Healing Voices “challenges us to rethink our cultural understanding of ‘mental Illness’ by bringing a message of recovery and charting a course for effective alternative treatments . . ..”  Agree or disagree, the documentary is fascinating, provocative, moving, and bound to influence any informed conversation of mental illness.   Moderated discussion to follow.   Co-sponsored by Amistad Inc. and the USM School of Social Work.  Please save the date!
