Real Outsider Art Show at Leighton Gallery in Blue Hill
The Leighton Gallery in Blue Hill will be open for a single show this summer: The ROAR show of original work by more than 50 Maine artists. ROAR stands for Real Outsider Art Response. It is a program of the Maine Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
This fun and meaningful event will interest casual viewers, new collectors and art connoisseurs. The candid, original drawings and paintings in this exhibit reflect joy, pain, bemusement, despair, hope, passion, curiosity—the full range of human vision and emotion. The work speaks from the heart, with graphic eloquence and intensity.
ROAR artists work outside the commercial and academic mainstreams. These artists function without concern for the art market or art history. Instead, they deal with arduous mental and emotional challenges that exempt them from professional pressures.
A program of NAMI Maine, ROAR supports artists in a number of ways. A portion of the proceeds from sales at this show will be given back to the artists. The remainder will be used to expand the program.
The Leighton Gallery has been dark since its founder’s death last year. Ms. Leighton’s heirs are generously allowing NAMI Maine to host this show as a fundraiser for the ROAR Program. The show will run from July 22nd to 29. An opening reception will be held on Sunday July 22nd from 5 to 7. Wine and light refreshments will be served. The show will run daily from 12 Noon to 5:00 PM from the 23rd through the 29th.
