NAMI Maine sponsors support groups throughout the state for people who have a mental illness (peers) and for family members and friends. Most groups meet weekly or monthly so that people with mental health or co-occurring substance use conditions, and family members, have a place to go to receive support. Groups are led by trained local volunteers. NAMI support groups provide a safe place for people to share their stories about their struggles with mental illness and learn from others. All support group discussions are considered confidential. Groups provide a place to meet with people experiencing similar issues and learn new strategies to handle daily challenges.
NAMI support groups also identify local educational needs and when appropriate, bring speakers into the group to address those needs. Support group facilitators agree to be available by phone to link new members to the group and to offer support between group meetings. To view a complete listing of support group meetings, click here, or select a location near you from the following list of cities and towns: Augusta, Bangor, Biddeford, Brunswick, Damariscotta, Dover-Foxcroft, Ellsworth, Harrington, Houlton, Lewiston, Livermore Falls, Machias, Norway-S. Paris. Old Orchard Beach, Portland, Raymond, Rockport, Rumford, Sanford, Waterville, York/Eliot
In addition new groups are in the process of being formed in other areas of the state. Contact contact Christine Canty Brooks by email or by calling the office at 1-800-464-5767 to be put on a waiting list to be notified when a new group starts near you.
NAMI Maine provides assistance starting a group, including help with group start up costs, materials, operating guidelines, and training for running a successful support group. If you need assistance finding a support group near you or are interested in starting a support in your community, please contact Christine Canty Brooks by email or by calling the office at 1-800-464-5767.
NAMI Maine has affiliated organizations throughout the state, consisting of five or more volunteers who have joined together to offer support, education, and advocacy at the local level. Affiliates have a local board of directors, bylaws, and organizational structure, and work to improve access to needed services, reduce stigma, and speak out about issues of importance to people with mental illness and their families. All affiliates sponsor support groups and many also sponsor trainings and provide other outreach services. NAMI Maine's affiliates welcome your interest and participation!
